2002

Any effects shop worth its salt has a stockpile of interesting moulds ripe for chucking a bit of leftover resin into. Here’s a trio of familiar-looking lifecasts that were knocked out on the side and then tickled with a paintbrush.

I created the fleshtones by building up very thin washes of acrylic ink. Starting with a pale pink base, each colour goes on a layer at a time: red, brown, yellow and blue.

It’s a painting technique that requires a leap of faith, because the early stages invariably look terrible. Suddenly, bingo – all the elements mesh together at the eleventh hour to produce a very subtle and convincing effect.
