F.A.Q.s: TC’s 1996 novice portfolio –

2001 verdict:

My thought processes behind these two were, “I’ll make a big splash by doing some REALLY unusual monsters!”

And that’s half the problem with them: they’re trying too hard. Tellingly, they were the two most criticised things in my whole portfolio at the time.

Skinny Monster: there’s a couple of elements to this I have a sneaking soft spot for. That said, the modelling overall is pretty weak and there’s areas where I’ve just plain lost interest. (Sculpted in Super Sculpey, painted with acrylics)

Cat Thing: the big idea with this one was to do a character with ‘stalactites of flesh’(!). The thing is, it’s the wacky ideas that need the most skill to make them believable… skill I didn’t possess at the time. I’ve also made the common beginner’s mistake of diving in and going haywire with the texturing without first making sure all the underlying forms are right.  (Sculpted in plastiline, moulded in plaster, cast in latex, painted with acrylics/latex mix)
